Hello everybody! I haven't really published anything for Doom before, but you might know me as a musician for Freedoom (FreeDM) or a musician, mapper and etc for Biff Fraggar's Libre Adventure, but in BFLA, I was limited by the project's rules. This is my own PWAD this time.


Diamoond is a vanilla 3 map PWAD with custom maps, music and graphics. Use the newest auto build of Freedoom for the best experience.

My Critcisms of Freedoomhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/137654-my-critcisms-of-freedoom/ As enthusiastic as I am about the Freedoom project, being a GNU/Linux user and supporting Free Software, I feel there are a lot of problems with it from both a gameplay and design standpoint. Firstly, from my own experience, the game just doesn't feel as fun or as satisfying to play as regular Doom. Despite sharing all of the underlying code and behavior, the weapons and sound design just don't feel as impactful or visceral as Doom. I feel this the most with the game's shotgun. Doom's shotgun is iconic, we all know this. ID's sound design and animation really made that shotgun what it is, and despite firing it thousands of times it never gets old. You feel powerful when using it, yet it feels smooth and quiet. It almost has a relaxing sound to it, which is strange but that's the best I can describe it.

 

Freedoom's shotgun on the other hand, and indeed it's entire weapon roster, just doesn't have that same appeal. The shotgun looks and sounds weak by comparison, and blasting away enemies just isn't as fun as it should be. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what I feel the problem is, but I would say it's a combination of both the animation and the sound design not really conveying the same sense of satisfaction as Doom. It sounds more like a toy than a shotgun. The enemies also leave a lot to be desired, I feel. They seem to lack the same visual clarity and appealing design of Doom's roster. A lot of the enemy sprites seem rather blurry and undefined, and coupled with the slightly less polished animations, makes them less enjoyable to blast away. A lot of the design decisions feel random and incoherent, one enemy appears to be a cybernetic soldier, while another appears more like a deformed squid, and another is a large pink worm. Doom's roster on the other hand felt a lot more consistent. The soldiers were zombies, and the demons felt like they meshed together more than a lot of the enemies in Freedoom and they embodiment their respective archetypes better. I feel the Imp replacements in particular are subpar, and I would rather they be redesigned into more of a "Creature from the Black Lagoon" type of monster. Better fitting the silhouette of Doom's imps, while being it's own thing. I also feel the chaingunners can be made into a similar creature as well, thereby cementing a connection of some kind. And the pink worms should be something akin to Pink Hulks, as if it were an experiment gone wrong.

 

The level design has also been touched upon many times, and I too feel it's inconsistent, even moreso than the likes of Doom II. Some levels are just downright unfair, and throw dozens of enemies at you with no regard for pacing. I would love to see other wad creators try their hand at improving them.

 

Overall, this is a fine effort, but there is a lot of room for improvement and I hope that one day Freedoom can be the ideal replacement for the non-free Doom.

I'm talking about the monster called Flesh Wizard at the Realm667 bestiary:

According to the credits there, the sprite sheet comes from Freed∞m, yet I don't remember this monster even being in any build of the project, and it appears to not be found in the attic (?). @Gez, since the credits mention you as the uploader, perhaps you could shed some light on this? I'm guessing that perhaps this was a contribution to Freed∞m that found no use, so it was repurposed as a custom monster with no project affiliation?

 

I am aware of this thread where @raymoohawk asks about the "flesh wizard", but apparently at least the reply refers to a completely different set of sprites that comes from the Army of Darkness TC.

Possible changes: remove convolutions (to make it look less like Mastermind), replace cameras with actual eyes, maybe even replace the brain with one big eye.

They got rejected on the grounds of being from an unsure source (freesound.org), and despite them being labelled as public domain, since it's not verified that these sounds are indeed original...well

 

They are quite grungy and a lot more intense than the current official sounds, but, also more satisfying, imho.

 

So, have them as a pwad.

 

And of course, if it's not clear, these are, at this point in time, not part of the actual freedoom distribution, but I think this might be the best place to post the pwad.

i am really inexperienced with all this moding stuff. All i did was install freedoom from google playstore, put doom.wad and doom2.wad, and some others in, and played. 

 

But i have a problem, i cant run some .pk3 files. For example, i can run brtaldoom.pk3 or destroyerofhell.pk3, however, others do not (for example ultimate_custom_doom.pk3)

 

Does anyone know why that is and how to fix it?

Really disliking high up enemies manhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/141073-really-disliking-high-up-enemies-man/ Are they normal for the regular Dooms also? I'm on Hostile takeover (Map 15, Phase 2) and that middle pit with the archvile and the revenants up on top behind fences and pillars and the cacodemons, etc.

 

Not even the skag (great name btw) is a solution because of the jank vertical mechanics (also skill issue cause I'm a noob)

Still, not fun, is it fun to you?

 

I sware I'm gonna edit all those damn high up enemy maps cause I don't think this is fun.

Do you enjoy it? If so, what's the appeal of that? That station earth map was annoying too with the imps on the walls. What's the point of these? To frustrate or to be fun?

I cannot tell and I'm genuinely curiuos.

 

This is pissing me off, lol. I have figured out that the tracking of the revenants is not very good vertically, so I can outrun them but I keep shooting at the damn wall cause the arena is surrounded by nukage and being too far it wont shoot up, being too close I can't see.

I literally know what I need to do but can't.

 

Damnit.

Beat it by running back and forth, in and out of the room :/

Have not quickloaded as much as there.

But I can't help but feel weirdly nostalgic about Freedoom. I have only been playing Doom for a year. Freedoom was weird to me back when I got into modding. It seemed like a bad indie fps you would find on the app store in 2012. But at the same time, that's kind of its unique charm. Everything seems plastic. I played through most of Freedoom Phase 1 on this GZDoom port I had on my tablet, and it was so annoying and hard to play because a game like Doom wasn't meant to be played on a tablet. But I had a great time with Freedoom, and I don't know if that sounds like blasphemy or not to a lot of people. You gotta respect how much work they had to do to make Freedoom.

What do you think of Freedoom? Am I alone here?

What's left on their roadmap criteria?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/140053-whats-left-on-their-roadmap-criteria/ As far as I know, there aren't any missing levels, all of the MIDI musical slots are filled in, and all of the copyrighted assets have been completely replaced.

 

I've heard talks of overhauling the Deathmatch WAD (FreeDM) because at least half of the maps kind of suck, but other than that, it seems like there's nothing left but maybe a few asset improvements.

Freedoom1/doom64https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/140211-freedoom1doom64/ I tried playing doom64 retribution(only 1.0-1.3 versions will play on it) on the Freedoom app from Google but for some reason the idclev stage select will not work until selecting stage 11 which turns into freedoom stage 11. No other doom64 maps seem to show up. However on Freedoom 2 all works fine. Since I kept Freedoom so Google would not hide or get rid of it, I wanted to see how doom64 worked. Any ideas why Freedoom 1 has this issue?
