Was dlc 2 for Doom eternal really that bad?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/141410-was-dlc-2-for-doom-eternal-really-that-bad/ It's been almost 3 years and I wonder how reception for doom eternals second dlc, named "The Ancient Gods: Part 2" which is a follow up to Doom Eternals previous dlc named "The Ancient Gods: Part 1". 

 

 

From what I remember the dlc wasn't received too well on release. It was criticized for being "too easy" and it's final boss was a HUGE disappointment for many. Also the dlc itself was criticized for lacking any identity. As it seemed there wasn't anything memorable about the dlc itself.

 

 

The arena fights were criticized for being too easy (as was the rest of the game itself). And so were the levels themselves. AS they were often criticized by lacking strong characteristics that made them fun to replay. 

 

 

But now it's 2023. And times have changed. Did tag 2 ruin doom?

When I think of Passion and Ambition, I think of The Ancient Gods Part 2. It's clear that ID weren't afraid to take risks with eternal, and were willing to go full on balls to the walls with tag 2. And honestly, i cant help but applaud ID for being THIS experimental with doom. And honestly, tag 2 (and the entirety of eternal) is the most ambitious doom game we've ever seen to date. 

 

 

There's just soo much character and personality with tag 2, just this one single dlc. From the environments to the new demon types (even if they're just reskins of older types from the previous eternal campaign cough cough cursed prowler cough cough). Still the effort, passion, and creativity was there!..it just needed more time in the oven to be fully realized.

You've got a good handle all your weaponry, your flame thrower and your frags; you're getting pretty comfortable at this point. Then along comes along this "boss" a$$hole called the Marauder that screws up your universe. Not only does he shoot at you when your too close, he'll release his hound after you if you haven't struck a blow in a bit. If you're too far, he's blast you with his axe. Shoot him and he'll just block it with his shield. You're first encounter with him is going to be a frustrating nightmare.

 

So here's how to beat his a$$ in less than 30 seconds. First of all, you need 3 things:

 

1) The Ballista Weapon

2) The Super Shotgun

3) The ability to change out weapons quickly through the Praetor Suit.

 

Start with your Ballista. Make sure before you walk into this room that you put your Super Shotgun as the weapon to switch to rapidly by pressing triangle.

 

Keep your distance, but not too far because he'll shoot you with his axe. And keep moving; stay still and you're dead. Try to ignore the other minions in the room if you can help it. Wait until the Marauder's eyes turn green when he swings his axe at you. Soon as that happens, blast him with your Ballista once. While he's stunned, quickly switch over to your Super Shotgun and give him another blast. Don't use the meat hook. He'll recover almost instantly after that. Switch over to your Ballista and repeat. If he releases the hound, blast that hound with your Super Shotgun.

 

And that's it! He'll be staggering in less than 30 seconds so you can Glory Kill his a$$.

 

Anyone know an easier way?

This doesn't make sense, because if we are playing as the same Doom Guy from Doom 1 and 2, that would mean Doom Slayer would have brown hair rather than black. In Doom3, you play as a marine with black hair. This means that Doom Slayer is from Doom3. I can also explain why it isn't the original Doom Guy. In one of the levels in Doom3, you see a stone tablet with classic Doom Guy, this could mean that Doom and Doom2 did happen, just way before Doom3. Either this is a really bad retconn, or Doom Slayer is from Doom3.

The Platforming Appreciation Threadhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/111846-the-platforming-appreciation-thread/ I'm part of this weird minority of players who actually enjoy first-person platforming (I wonder if you can tell). I've always been a big fan of the increased movement capabilities in DOOM4 but I honestly didn't expect Eternal to go as far as it does in the platforming direction. The combination of double jump and double dash, wall mounting, swinging on those rods or whatever, shooting timed buttons to jump though doors, avoiding hazards midair - it's like a surprise gift for me. I know that people generally hate platfoming in shooters so the id's decision to include it in the game was completely unexpected. Hopefully it's as fun as it looks in the gameplay videos.


I do have mixed feelings about the fact that falling into the abyss simply teleports you back to the ledge without any penalty... But I do understand that it's tricky to design platforming in a way that would not instantly frustrate the player. Instant death just leads to reloading which is not any different from teleporting back and forcing the player to traverse a certain distance to get back to where they were can be quite irritating. But anyway, I cannot really complain as I didn't expect this to be in the game in the first place.


So I wonder, how many insane people share my excitement for the platforming in Eternal?

Personally I'd like to see a new IP, but in the style of Doom and Quake. Maybe something with some fantasy elements, like a Quake 1 / Hexen hybrid. Same type of gameplay where it's skill based combat that is fast paced and monster heavy. I'd love to see that gritty fantasy medieval vibe of the first Quake again.

 

(I wouldn't say no to another Doom, though.)

At Doom's Gate: The Ultimate Story/Timeline Guide (FULL SPOILERS)https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/139599-at-dooms-gate-the-ultimate-storytimeline-guide-full-spoilers/ As it turns out well over a year ago, someone managed to pull off the enviable task of finally piecing together the timeline for the entire Doom franchise (barring spinoffs such as Final Doom, the two Doom RPGs, etc.).
I've since decided to put this here just to make sure this gets more attention, even if this is quite a hefty read.

And you may wonder, why put this here in the Doom Eternal subforum? Well, as you're about to see, Doom Eternal essentially becomes the sort of backbone for the franchise's story thus far.

So without further ado, the timeline guide for the entire Doom franchise (be warned as there be full spoilers here):
 

 


As for my personal thoughts:

Regarding this document itself, not only does it do an amazing job at piecing together aspects of nuDoom which might've initially been confusing or unintentionally ambiguous. While there is quite a reliance either on speculation or outright fan theories or headcanons (often noted as such), it is nicer to see titles such as Doom 3 get some well-deserved love.

Not only that, I feel that Doom's story as of late has gotten quite a fair amount of vitriol (first with Doom 3, and then with Doom Eternal which might as well be the Diablo 3 of the franchise; seriously, some people had outright dismissed the game's graphics as being "kiddy" and not being dark enough).



I'm not going to lie: I have my own personal set of issues with the kinds of plot elements that Doom Eternal in particular had introduced (and to a lesser extent, Doom 2016).

I'm not so sure I'm able to fully gel with the plot point of "Hell was once a super-heaven called Jekkad". I'm completely fine with the entirety of the Urdak/Night Sentinel timelines, just not the Hell timeline.
I know that this clearly takes inspiration from mythology and biblical stories, but the end result is a series of strange continuity issues that basically culminate in Doom no longer being a never-ending fight against evil incarnate but essentially some sort of interstellar chess game (AKA a similar issue the Doom novels ran into). Not only that, much of Hell's mystique is just gone outright (though I will actually argue that this has actually been an issue as far back as Doom 2016, though in that case it's mainly just "demons have literally turned into a literal punchline instead of being fearsome like they used to").
As a result, a lot of Doomguy's struggles essentially come across almost as insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and the scale of his fight ends up being surprisingly small (almost like a petty squabble amongst a royal family more than anything).
Not helping is that Hell essentially has to follow a set of "rules" when it comes to topics such as where it's allowed to invade, the hierarchies of demonic entities such as archdemons, etc.

I mean, isn't a core factor of Hell is that it's literally a dimension of pure chaos? Why would it need to follow rules?

Not only that, TAG2 in particular was very much meant to be the end of the story arc which began with Doom 2016 but ended up coming across as being the grand finale for the Doom franchise (which was very much unintentional).

But all of this can be amended: these particular plot points can be addressed without necessarily having to resort to retcons.
Hell's mystique can be restored, and the demons can be made scary again.

A Diablo IV can be made for the Doom franchise, if you catch my drift.

Hell, a larger goal of a project of mine is to hopefully attain this exact goal; shameless self-promotion ftw


If anything, I suspect all of this was a side effect of The Ancient Gods probably being a case of id Software biting off more than they could chew (especially since it was planned at one point for Doom Eternal's campaign DLCs to instead be about various survivors instead of continuing the Slayer's story).
Either that, or someone just wanted to be done with having to handle the Doom franchise and move on to other things for the time being (maybe to something like Quake).

But in the end, I'd prefer not to speculate over what may or may not have happened, over what could have been.

And in the end, there's good ideas but it didn't quite stick the landing when it comes to execution.
But I do think that it's salvageable, and I feel that the document I brought here is proof of this.



So yeah, Doom's story isn't really the most consistent at all. It's frustratingly told at times, and Doom Eternal in particular does seem to struggle with it.

But more than anything, I suspect that it's just more of a side effect when it comes to gameplay-vs-story ratio, and I know for sure that special care was placed on the player ripping and tearing while telling the best story they can.

While the story has issues, I do feel that not only did id truly work to really throw caution to the wind and tell a story filled with passion, they did so with the constraints they had to work with.

And that to me is not only commendable but outright admirable.


Just to quote part of the document's ending:

It’s poetic, in a way. Its writers, very clearly, had an immeasurable amount of passion for
the Doom canon, new and old, and sought to write a satisfying story that tied this iconic franchise
together under one creation myth - a story of machines, of swords and shields, of rage and hatred,
of oppression and defiance. It has its issues, but I will be blunt: those issues mean nothing to me
in the face of what is truly a passion project, a story written by people who care about Doom. Who
care about its story, its characters, and its legacy. Trivialities such as the occasional contradiction
or a plot point being too rushed mean nothing when we have a story filled with this much love and
care for its source material. Other franchises would beg for treatment as good as this.

So, is Doom’s lore good? The obvious answer, of course, is yes. It is not just good - as
someone who has studied every conceivable facet of its writing and backstory, I am of the opinion
that it is fantastic - a genre-hopping, epic, well-thought-out, and truly badass story. It is worthy of
Doom’s reputation. Of course a franchise as iconic as important as Doom would receive a story
to match, in spite of its flaws - which, mind you, there are. It does have flaws, but is one not able
to love something in spite of its flaws? Doom’s story makes up for its occasional missteps with
sheer passion, creativity, and love for its franchise.

So one could ask: what is the point? What is the point of this story, its moral, its lesson?
Why tell it? I put forth my opinion on Doom’s story: It is a story about destiny, the
weaponization of rage in the face of injustice, and humanity’s need to cut its own path. It
is a story about defiance in the face of uncountable odds - of looking in the face of those who
would seek to subjugate and harvest your life, and to say no. Hatred in the face of oppression
and authoritarianism is not only valid; it is sacred.



While I am also of the opinion that Doom has always been action-horror, it can do so much more with what it has to work with, and Doom Eternal is just one example of what the franchise can be.

Doom Eternal II (aka Shadow Warrior 3) Rules!https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/137024-doom-eternal-ii-aka-shadow-warrior-3-rules/ Does this perhaps belong in the "Other" category? Maybe. But since the game is so inspired by Doom Eternal, I feel here is right at home. Just tried it out a day or two ago, and it is every bit as awesome as the trailers made it out to be. Admittedly, I have not played the other rebooted Shadow Warrior games, but the new iteration of Lo Wang in SW3 is imo the funniest one yet. He really feels like Duke Nukem meets Doom Eternal with gorgeous oriental aesthetics. Got some Titanfall-esque wall-running too.

 

Probably one of the best shooters, in terms of pure fun factor, compared to anything else out there. It is to DE what Duke3D was to original Doom, in my opinion.

 

Have you guys tried it yet? How do you feel it compares to Eternal?

A new 1/6th scale DOOM Slayer action figure is available for pre-order from various outlets. This is the Mondo figure that was originally revealed as a prototype back in 2020. There was no further news about the figure after that initial reveal, so some people assumed it had been cancelled. Well, it's finally releasing and is planned to ship sometime between November 2023 and January 2024.

 

A standard edition is available from Bethesda Gear Store for US $250.00, and an Exclusive edition with some additional weapons and a Lost Soul is available from Dark Horse Direct for US $295.00.

As for my opinions on the figure, I think it's too darn expensive for what is shown in the photos. The coloring on some parts of the DOOM Slayer's armor such as the boots looks off, and his hands seem tiny. I'm curious to see what others' reviews are like once the figure ships. Regardless, I'm still pretty happy with the McFarlane figures. I never got the figma though due to some mediocre reviews (the figure's joints are ugly and the shoulder cannon is extremely fragile).

 

In addition to the Mondo figure, a little stained glass window ingot of the crucible sword is available for pre-order from Fanattik. Note Fanattik's prices are higher than some stores, so it's probably better to see if the stuff on their website is available elsewhere first. Fanattik also has a classic key set and a silver edition of their floppy replica available.
