i just realized how the wait for doom 4 (now known as doom 2016) went for 12 long years. doom 2016 took a long time in the making.

doom 3 released all the way back in Aug 03, 2004. while doom 2016 was released in May 13, 2016. think about how much can change in 12 years...

More food for thought: It was eleven years between Doom ‘93 and Doom 3 - that’s where a lot changed.

Between the first Doom and Doom 3, between Doom 3 and Doom 2016, the number of people working on the game increases almost tenfold:

Doom 2016 - around 1090 developers

Doom 3 - about 135 developers

Doom 1993 - 15 people, including a handful of nerds from Texas

Fun fact: exactly the same amount of years (12) passed between the release of Quake 4 (2005) and Quake Champions (2017). Even though QC was not precisely released in 2017, but that is when the game became available in early access; subsequently, it became available for free. It had been in the beta for 5 long years and was only officially released in 2022, despite Quake Pro League and Quake Challengers already existing and Quake World Championships happening on QuakeCons for years by that time.

We were originally expecting these games to be called "Doom 4" and "Quake 5", and nowadays we know them as Doom (2016) and Quake Champions. Even though Doom (2016) was simply called Doom for some reason and its official name is just "DOOM".

It seems like 12 is some "magical" number representing the amount of years that we had to wait to see the logical and historical continuing of our favorite game series, but for the most part this time was worth it, in my opinion.

I remembered the hype I had for a new Doom game all the way back in 2015-2016. Fast forward to 2023 when I finally got the PC that supports both 2016 and Eternal, I am finally a happy man.

The wait for DOOM 3 was the most interesting though. Funniest thing about it was how they hyped it for targeting the next generation Geforce 3 cards and how amazing the game will look for taking advantage of such a beast, and by the time it got released the Radeon 9700 was already a mainstream card and also the recommended one for the game, that's 2 tiers above the GF3.

It was the 2001 Tokyo MacWorld event where Jobs unveiled that the GeForce 3 was coming to Mac first (not sure that ended up being the case) and brought Carmack out on stage to unveil their WIP (very early doom 3 footage) utilizing realtime shadows & lighting, hi poly counts, etc. The "Birdman" reveal.

This was not too many months after 3dfx collapsed and Nvidia gobbled their tech & engineers up, so it was kind of a dawn of a new era without Voodoo chips competing with the upcoming GeForce 3.

The following year someone from ATI leaked the 2002 E3 reveal demo of Doom that still utilized the Reznor sounds. It was playable with some tweaking, but still showed Doom 3 had a long way to go. I remember running that leaked demo on a GeForce 4 lol.

Couple more years pass and the Nvidia 6800 Ultra releases. Doom 3 doesn't ship for a several months after that.

By then the GeForce 3 was all but history unless you were still waiting for the release on the original Xbox... which was still powered by a pentium 3 coppermine with a custom GeForce 3 variant. And I believe even then, it still ran Doom 3 on low settings.

Still remember how everyone thought DOOM 3 was gonna be the defacto game for the GeForce 3, but ends up being released 3 card generations later. Was fun times.

True, i also had this leaked demo and played it on my Geforce 4 Ti and it run pretty badly, though to be fair, it wasn't supposed to de optimized for everyone.

I remember being impressed by the moving machinery parts and their sounds and how the final game felt lacking in comparison with it's crappy weapon and explosion sounds and how the monster corpses disappeared before they even hit the ground to inspect them a bit.
