live now, let's get merry and festive

I feel like images like these are getting more relatable the older I get, sadly. The best part of my life was probably the short period between finishing high school and beginning university. For once, I was very glad that I was free from my old environment, and that I would be able to shape my life into something better. I had a lot of optimism and excitement for what would come next. Within a few years that enthusiasm had crumbled down though.

An excerpt from Ai Game Engine Programming by Brian Schwab(2004). Despite the book's age, I feel it's relevant to the topic at hand. I feel that just because the "AI" in Doom isn't very "intelligent", or doesn't involve neural networks like AI models of today such as ChatGPT, doesn't mean it cannot be referred as an AI. To me, intelligence is demonstrated by the ability to solve practical problems and adapting to various circumstances. The enemies in Doom behave differently, depending on their distance from the player, whether they can see them, and and the shape of terrain they find themselves in. That's good enough for me. Relating to the above, I like to think of my thermostat as intelligent. 🙃

The Top 50 WADs of 1994 - Celebrating 30 Years of Doom

Awesome, nice to see more appreciation of 90score. May I ask why version 1.666 of Dante's Gate was included instead of 2.5? -

Sure, here it is: My screen's resolution is 2560x1440, but I run the game in a window smaller than that. -

Hello. I like the port, but the screenshots taken end up being corrupted. Tried fiddling with the screenshot and palette setting, to no avail. I'm using 8x rendering if that makes a difference. Using latest, 2.2.1. -
Happy 30th to Doom. The game's impact on the gaming scene cannot be overstated, but enough's been said about that. I've been planning to honour not just it, but also Boom, the source port that enabled the modding community to move forward, as it's 25 years old now. Unfortunately, I am feeling sick. so my tribute WAD's gonna arrive at a later date.

IIRC Duke Nukem 3D had a somewhat-official level released for it in the 90s called Duke's Penthouse Paradise. Penthouse was like a magazine where you could look at pictures of naked ladies. Therefore, the level itself also contained such NSFW pictures. Given that this was actually released by the company behind the magazine, this counted as being officially released. Doom had Chex Quest, and the more obscure Kick Attack. But imagine a timeline where the game also received this kind of treatment...

Hey. Here's my Room. Sorry for taking so long, this semester turned out to be kind of more exhausting than expected. Kinda gimmicky. JMBOX18.7z -
Yes, that's the one. Why the fuck did this receive an award in animation...

The worst ad I can think of is the one I've seen as a young child once on TV. It advertised some hygiene product, but I don't remember what for or how it was called. It shows a group of tiny demons or gremlins appearing beside a human foot. One of them grabs the toenail of the large toe and opens it like a latch/trapdoor, and it shows an entrance to some kind of fleshy cave. The gremlins go inside and enter inside, then they wreck the pink fleshy surface of the cave and cover it with brown substance, indicating ruin. That freaked me out back then, but since I only saw it once, I thought it could have just been a dream. Nonetheless, several years later, I did stumble a weird ad compilation on youtube, and that thing was actually featured. I think it also included an ending where a fireman made out of white liquids uses the white liquid to eradicate the gremlins and clean the damage they caused, further adding to the WTF factor. What a fucking ad, amirite? On a less disgusting and more of a funny note, I know that Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for the SNES had an ad where a man is enjoying a meal, and the more the narrator praises/gets excited about the game, the more the man in question gets fatter/more inflated. Certianly, this was patient zero for some people's deviantart kinks...

Interesting. From what I understood, the way GZDoom renders voxels is that every single voxel is rendered as a separate cube, all sides are rendered regardless if they can be seen from the outside or not. That's why mod authors generally recommend to use regular 3d models isntead, as they are better for optimisation. I wonder if this new approach in this thread is better optimised and doesn't render the sides we don't get to see.

I came across this page today: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_3_soundtrack A bit of a barebones article, with only 4 edits, but it nonetheless lists 26 tracks. The thing is, according to Google, there never was any album release for the the soundtrack of Doom 3, so it appears that the track names were invented by the fans. However, as the music of the game mostly composes of quiet ambience and short stingers, you could find up to a hundred or so music files within the game's files. With that in mind, I would like to ask where the figure of 26 tracks seen on the wiki came from, as there aren't any sources cited here. So, should this article be dismissed as inaccurate? On a side note, while it's possible to extract the theme song from the game's files, it's kind of low in quality(a measly 33 kbps OGG file), but the wiki and Wikipedia state that the band who made it released it on their website. I would be interested in acquiring that song in the best possible quality format, without YouTube's encoding interfering in the file structure(I just prefer "raw" formats), so that's why I am going to ask around here...
