So I thought it would be ok to resurrect that thread here. And in honor of the old thread, this is what I'm listening to (bonus points if you know why :P):

#1:
I remember many years ago, I used to binge websites with free videogame collections, you know, flashgames and stuff like that. Games made by random people.
Around the time when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was in development and youtube poops were really popular, there was a vertical SHMUP game floating around the internet. I can't remember what the story was or even who the main character is. But I remember that it was set in space and it only had like 4 levels. In the main menu, there was a hidden way to fight Weegee (yeah, that meme version of Luigi) but I forgot how exactly it worked.
But what sticked to my mind the most was the final boss, which is also the reason why I started this whole thread. It was some kind of sword, I suppose at least, with some differently colored crystals floating around it. The boss didn't really do much, it just chased you around slowly and had a shitton of HP if I remember right. The music used for this fight, was the music of the final boss in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Tabuu. What's weird was, is that SSBB wasn't even out at that point. I'm pretty sure that the game still had like 9 more months until it finally released.
Now, does ANYBODY know which SHMUP I'm talking about? I cannot find any videos about it and also, how is it possible that it uses music from a game that wasn't even finished yet? Or maybe SSBBÂ already released in Japan or something?

#2:
This one is much simpler. It's about the music from Sonic Mania that plays in Studiopolis Zone Act 1. The music is quite the banger, which is why I added it to my playlist. The thing is tho, that I'm really irritated by this track. Sonic Mania came out in 2017... but I distinctly remember hearing the music being used in some youtube videos long before that. Especially this part here that starts at 0:55:
Â
I remember hearing this part of the music used in some meme videos and similiar stuff like that, in a sort of trolly way, long before Sonic Mania got released. Is my mind playing tricks on me? Or is it maybe like, that this music already existed before Sonic Mania or something, and they decided to use in the game? Or maybe the music already got revealed while the game was still in development?
When I heard this full music for the first time, I distinctly remember going something like "Wait I know this one! Finally I know where it's from! But wait a minute... Sonic Mania only came out recently??"

Obviously, we see AKE 6 above the Quake logo, this is quake 6, assumingly quake 5 was quake champions or maybe dotm, it isnt impossible that "quake 6" was either cancelled or just is cotm, but this seems something of note that I haven't seen much talk about online.Â
Also thoughts on the new Indiana Jones game? looks pretty good so far imo, just hoping it sticks to this year.

I’d just provide one or two sentences of why or why not you’d be in danger fighting the above avatar to keep each post full of substance.

while blood's atmosphere, visual design, and music are all undeniably fantastic...i feel like the gameplay falls short of being anywhere near as good as those aspects. a lot of the enemies are tanky as fuck, the hitscanners are genuinely aggravating (and i say that as someone who uses the shit out of hitscanners in their doom maps), the amount of swinging doors compared to something like duke3d really brings out the worst aspects of the build engine, it has not one but TWO tiny hard to hit enemies, and the gargoyles are just...eugh.
Â
i know that it's known as a hard game, but the difficulty feels much more along the lines of "irritating bullshit" than it does "challenge that you can overcome". also, before you tell me that i just need to "get good", keep in mind that i really don't feel the same way about a lot of the more challenging doom mapsets; even the ones like speed of doom's poison ivy, a map people love to bitch and moan about, i feel are nowhere near as annoying as blood can be. even though they're mean, the enemies themselves are still fun to fight against and feel fair. blood doesn't have that going for it unfortunately, and even when the level design is great it can get dragged down quite a bit by the fact that the fundamentals just aren't there.
Â
now, i do still enjoy blood despite its flaws. it's just that i don't think that it stacks up against its contemporaries as well as a lot of people say it does, and i certainly wouldn't call it one of the best 90s fps games. it's a decent game, just very flawed. great atmosphere can only get you so far when your gameplay just isn't the best.

Everyone should know by now that I love my sexy ladies. My current background is a compilation of two pictures, credit to Necro-Kitten at Deviantart for the Egyptian cat. The other one is credit to Delta___001 on Ifunny. My backgrounds are usually kickbutt women or pictures of Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

I'll start off with a couple of obscure 2000s PC games that I know of.
Â
Pizza Dude - a pizza delivery sandbox game released in 2005 developed by Team6 Game Studios. The game is very buggy, has a chance of crashing and has low-budget graphics.
Â
Chris Sawyer's Locomotion - a sequel to Transport Tycoon released in 2004, powered by the same engine as Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. Compared to its predecessor, it wasn't a hit commercially and recieved mostly negative reviews, and many people opted to play OpenTTD or Simutrans instead.
Â
Tycoon City: New York - a city Simulator game released in 2006 that focuses solely on New York City, developed by Deep Red Games and published by Atari.

If you know of any other obscure 2000s PC games, feel free to comment here.
]]>The defining thing about the Classic/Retro FPS craze that started around 2016 or so was that it was in opposition to "Modern Shooters." If you look at interviews with the DOOM 2016 developers for example, they said they wanted to move away from the trend of cover shooters with regenerating health, and ultra-linear level design. Over and over they insist how ground-breaking "push forward combat" is. Did video games before Doom 2016 not have aggression at all?
As a person who never played anything before that era, an FPS campaign is synonymous with 90s style shooters. I cannot imagine how an FPS game would work without a pistol/shotgun/rocket-launcher/bfg setup and keycards, it just seems alien to me. This "Modern Singleplayer Shooter" is like a myth to me, something I accept for granted but I've never actually experienced. I've never played COD, Battlefield, or Halo, and these are series that I associate with Multiplayer, not singleplayer. My assumption is that nobody really plays the singleplayer campaigns of these games and only care about the PvP modes.
What I've been (jokingly) told is that after the year 2000 all shooters became bland, colorless, military simulators without any humor, complexity, or strategy. This can't possibly have been true. I want to branch out to different games and see shooters from a different perspective. What shooter should I play that is as far from retro-style FPS games as can be?

I'm playing Vampire The Masquerade: Redemption. Since this came out before Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, I thought I would check this one out. It takes place in medieval times and is more of a "proper" RPG than the later installment was. It's certainly interesting, while I do like it I can't play it for more than an hour at a time (though I'm not much of a gamer so playing it all means something to me) because it's slightly repetitive but I do like it as I've already clocked in ~6 hours. It feels like Diablo was a soft influence on this one, but the feeding on people in public towns is automatically spoiled when guards home in on you like they immediately know what you're up to so I have to buy ALL the blood vitae in the world and those get used up fast. Maybe you're supposed to use the "charm" discipline to feed in public, but that didn't work for me, and it was much easier to sneak in a quick bite on an unsuspecting person in Bloodlines than it is here. Overall, still a good game tho. The vampire aspects make this very interesting, and it's a fresh take on being a wizard but you're using precious vitae (from blood) to wield said "magic" powers instead.

tl;dr - is gud, I recommend

Yesternight, Windows 10 gave me a bit of a scare when it got stuck trying to install the KB5034441 security update. I had to force-reboot my computer and it appears to be fine, but I feel like spreading the word around to make sure this does not happen to more people. Apparently, the security update is faulty and you should avoid installing it for the time being, especially when the workaround suggested by Microsoft could actively damage your system.

Jennell (Born Paul) was a designer at Id for Quake II and Quake III, though that was only one of the many things she worked on over her career.
Â
In addition to the Quake games, I most know her work from old RPG games, where her non-linear dungeon layouts still draw praise and serve as inspiration. (For a while people were even using the term "Jacquaying a dungeon" to mean dungeons that are non-linear both in terms of exploration space, and player interactions, though eventually this term was replaced.)
Â
I knew she was having health problems lately but I didn't know how bad they had gotten recently.

The top link has a further link to a gofundme for funeral and medical costs, run by her wife Rebecca Heineman, another name familiar to Doom fans.
