10 Years of Doom(world)

Recommended Posts

It was exactly ten years ago today that a dumb little high schooler named Linguica helped launch what at the time was the biggest and bestest website devoted entirely to id Software's Doom series. For some reason that dumb little high schooler is still around, yeah I don't know why either. Since then we've seen way too much stuff to mention - countless projects, WADs, source ports, DM games, and a measly one new Doom game. Oh well. You can go back and see what the world was like a decade ago, at least the Doomy part of it.

Well, the first news entry there is from the 12th by Covaro, so that apparently makes it 10 years and 1 day :p

I do wonder how American's online gambling career is going nowadays.

Well we started news 1 day before the site opened so it wasn't just empty.

Things have slowed down a touch, I see.

They have, yet some of the things that would have been posted as news back then appear in the forums, since unlike in '98 all users can post and comment freely.

First of all happy birthday Doomworld.
Well, one different is also at 98, that doom was nearly as old as today, I know "Doom never die, only the doomers".

WOW, Doom has gone such a long way over the years. With all these new ports, mods, and what not. Props to Id Software, and the DooM community.

I was eight years old when Doomworld was born. heh. that was back in the day when me and my best friend used to sneak into his basement play Doom 64 on his older brother's N64, 'cuz we werent allowed to play Doom. heh.

The Doom Community was so exciting back then. Team TNT and Lee Killough opened everyone's eyes as to the potential of a dated game engine, even by 1998's standards. Every week or so there would be an evolutionary jump in what the Doom engine was capable of doing. The Doom scene I think today is less about the game and more about the people in the community itself. To be honest I haven't played Doom in a long time.

Let us bow our heads to the ones that didn't make it:
DoomNation, and Doom Center, you are missed.

Boy oh boy we do feel old. I'm sure a lot of people hung around the site for a year or two before signing up. I sure did.

I really enjoyed the old site and the "antics" of the early members.

Happy Birthday Doomworld!

It's funny... Ralphis and I were talking yesterday about what a ridiculously large part of our lives Doomworld has been. For Ralphis, it was half his life... for me, I was a sophomore in High School. I stumbled across a Quake Mod of Ghostbusters and said "Wow, I could make a Doom mod of Ghostbusters". Since then I've spent the last 10 years... on and off... doing work in this community for dozens of projects even some of my own *gasp*. I look at the quality of my artwork when I began and take a look at my talent now... and I am absolutely amazed at how far I have come. Illustrating and modding Doom greatly contributed to improving me as an artist and my understanding of game design.

Doomworld has been such a stupidly large part of my life... to the point that I don't even really work on Doom anymore, but stay around for many of the people and the community. I think the real question is... how in the hell did Telefragged stay around so long? I know they were bought by Atomic Gamer... but damn, what kept Doomworld's host operating for most of that time!?

Happy birthday! :D

A really long time... IIRC I released my first map in 1999, so next year it will be 10 years of boris!

Congratulations or equivalent.
I was 13 back then :O

There is a lot to be learned from Doom. Especially in the modding aspect. Today it takes a half-time dedicated team of 20 people just to create a regular sized expansion pack. It should not have to be that way, even with today's high standards.

Happee burstday! Like most people here today (I guess), I lurked and lurked and then registered a few years back and posted sometimes.

And idgames.net, and Doom-Sector, and whoever else was out there. But screw them, Doomworld was obviously the only one that had any talent! (I guess being first never hurts)

And Doomsphere.

Anyway, congrats Doomworld! It certainly doesn't feel like 10 years since the site began :).

hb 10 doomworld
but i think doomgate beats them all
after all they do host idgames/ and everyone copies.
if it wasn't for doomgate we wouldn't have a doomworld.

Nice, started lurking here around 2003 and not long after I played my first mod (frag house w/ Doom Legacy) after discovering a community after only playing the IWADs; and look what ports and maps, etc. we have now after such a long time!
Still looking foward to the future of Doomworld.com
