  • In the last 25 years, Doomers have produced tens if not hundreds of thousands of maps; even the ones on /idgames are all but impossible to count, and there are easily thousands more that haven’t made it onto the archives and are consigned to old shovelware CDs, lost hard drives, vaporware development threads, or worse yet, ModDB.

But only a relative handful of those maps (call it a few thousand) are played, loved, and remembered. The Cacowards and similar endeavors have sought to chronicle the best and most noteworthy throughout the community’s history – but it’s been 25 years now, and let’s face it, we all want an all-out celebrity deathmatch of every map ever made, right? Luckily, we’ve done all the work for you. Welcome to our highly curated list of The Top 100 Most Memorable Doom Maps Of All Time.

Although we realize that any individual person who reads this list would have picked a different selection, we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together. It’s been a great opportunity to look back at everything that’s been done, think about what’s been significant, beloved, or loathed, give recognition to individual maps from megawads that may or may not have gotten Cacowards, and just generally show our love for the community’s massive output.

It’s worth mentioning that this list only includes singleplayer maps, and generally only maps that were made for Ultimate Doom or Doom 2 (though you may spot a stand-alone TC or two). Nor did we concern ourselves with commercial IWAD maps (including Final Doom), because why give up all those slots to maps with an unfair advantage when we could be recognizing more community mappers? We may as well also point out that technically speaking, this list has 105 maps on it, because we ran into a few pairs of maps that we consider to be truly inseparable. We hope you’ll forgive us.

Cheers to everyone who has made and played these maps and kept the community alive for all these years! And long live Doom mapping!

(PROGRAMMING NOTE: If you intend to download the projects contained within and skip right to the designated map, please be aware that many of the projects don't expect you to be pistol-starting (or whatever-weapon-starting) on a map in the middle of the project, and projects with more advanced gameplay systems might not work as you expect at all. Also if you want a bare list and don't care to read our musings, then fine, here's the wiki page.)
