The DWmegawad Club plays: Realm of Chaos 25th Anniversary Edition
dobu gabu maru posted a topic in WAD Discussion
What is the DWmegawad Club? This is a place where we settle down, have a cup of tea (or drink of your choice) and take a month to play through a megawad on our own, together! Any keen observations, criticisms, or frustrated ranting about it goes here in the discussion. As long as you want to say something about what you've played, feel free to speak your mind. Can I join? Sure. The only rule is that you have to play at least some of the levels in our monthly megawad to contribute, but you're generally encouraged to finish the whole thing, even if you've played it before. What levels am I allowed to post about? Whatever day of the month it is, is the upper limit for the map you can post on. So if it’s the 6th, you may discuss up to MAP06. Do I have to post an entry every day? Nope, not at all. This is only for our more enthusiastic members. As long as you play through it with us you’re part of the club. When do we vote on the next month’s megawad? Voting begins on the 25th of the current month. Remember to add one “+++” before your vote to make it easier to count. For example: +++ Ultimate Doom Note that you can vote for up to three separate nominations in a single month, and every wad must contain at least three maps each. The winning nomination must receive at least four votes for a thread to be made. Ties will be decided by RNG. ---------- >>>DOWNLOAD REALM OF CHAOS 25TH (v1.5) HERE<<< Chaos rears its ugly head once more! Realm of Chaos: 25th Anniversary Edition is an enhanced remake of The Macintosh Team’s original 1996 Realm of Chaos, with musician-extraordinaire Cammy at the helm (who produced the entire soundtrack on a MacBook Air!) Ultimate Doom "In Name Only" - On IDgames
dobu gabu maru replied to cannonball's topic in WAD Releases & Development
lol of course saving in the wrong nodebuilder is the culprit. It'd be funny how often this was the issue, if it wasn't equal parts frustrating due to how hard it is to "spot". Also if you're doing a re-upload cannonball, could you delete lines 173-175 in the text file? It's the stuff in parenthesis directly below the MAPS 'N MUSIC header. As the final release doesn't include the E4_MUS wad, it doesn't make sense to keep that blurb. -

I saw someone encounter this bug during playtesting but I looked at the map of the release version and figured we had fixed it since everything "should" work as-is, but alas! Nodebuilder errors are nasty little bed bugs. And good on you for finding more bugs plums, it's annoying to have to deal with more of them but your keen eye is invaluable. -
Ultimate Doom "In Name Only" - On IDgames

Yuppers. Always wanted to do something fun with intentional HOMs. Just as a heads up, the gameplay can be rough in the last two episodes from pistol start on skill 4. Heels' maps in E3 are very demanding and my maps in E4 are purposely low on ammo. I think a few people have burst blood vessels over them. -

Hey! So in celebration of our final release (as well as that nifty award we picked up), here's something a little weird, a little unnecessary, and (possibly?) a little fun! >>> DOWNLOAD UNFINISHED DOOM IN NAME ONLY <<< What is this? UnDINO is a compilation of early alpha maps from UDINO, showing what each of the maps played like in their relative infancy. I've also included some maps in the fifth episode slot that I've dubbed Thy Cut Content, which includes maps that were cut from the project. Note that I didn't include everything submitted—mainly stuff I had lying around from the post-cannonball takeover. Missing are some scraps from Jaws in Space, Impie, and stonedbaroness. Why do this? UnDINO serves as a fully-playable snapshot into our development history. It gives folks a glimpse into pre-edited versions of a lot of these maps, as well as showcasing how rough a pre-playtested map setcan feel. Unfortunately not every map here is in its pre-playtested state—I think most of these have already received feedback from at least cb & magnusblitz—but there are a few rough cuts here and there. Will this be uploaded to /idgames? No. This is mainly an historical curio and I doubt our authors would like partially-finished maps attached to their names. I'm cool with an external link from doomwiki to UnDINO but folks should really play the actual UDINO before diving into this mess. What are the cut maps? There are eight in total I was able to scrounge together. Which maps have changed the most? Hoo boy where to begin? Lemme give a rundown: Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3 Episode 4 Anyhoo, enjoy! There's probably some things busted in this mapset (the e & umapinfo are stolen from other wads) but oh well—it is a scrappy set after all. -
Great post, and I think this is also why it's important that the cacowards have expanded their approach to accommodate. There's just a lot of different avenues and directions to explore in the scene, and the broader a light the panel shines on it, the better. Kinda crazy thinking about how in the past that musicians, new mappers, gameplay modders, etc. were just absent from the discussion for the most part.

This goddamn community has no brakes holy cow (also the section on community music is really cool, glad to see so many great soundtracks recognized)

Not Jabba's Not the Cacowards Review Corner (rd reviews Heaven Stroll)
dobu gabu maru replied to Not Jabba's topic in WAD Discussion
Thanks for the UDINO mention! This year has been crazy for both video games & Doom wads, and anyone trying to keep up with them is even crazier. Just so much cool and interesting stuff coming out (which makes me wonder how much of this year's rush of creativity isn't just due to MyHouse popularity but celebrating Doom's 25th anniversary?) A solid, diverse list Jabba; thanks for putting I Can't Give You Any Thing on my radar. -

[Final release] “Hell's Bane” - an Ult Doom megawad
dobu gabu maru replied to Chris Hansen's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Congrats on the (soon to be) release Chris, 25 years is an unbelievable amount of time to stick around the scene and produce levels for! You're definitely a mapper that's only gotten better with age & experience, so this thing should be a ton of fun. -
The DWmegawad Club plays: I C H I N I C H I
dobu gabu maru replied to dobu gabu maru's topic in WAD Discussion
I would say it is eligible. It certainly is an edge case but considering that it's a blend of remake & remaster (as well as having been played 10 years ago by an entirely different group of clubgoers), I'm gonna allow it. I know the Bagrow maps have gotten a pretty extensive facelift/redesign but looking through it, even the Berkowitz stuff has different room geometry and enemy placement (amidst new textures & music of course), which is plenty different in my eyes. The rule is there more for the sake of preventing folks from voting for Alien Vendetta or Scythe year in year out. -

(I also added a little visual hint in E4M8 so opening the berserk door won't be as impossible to deduce.) It's been a long, winding road! A big THANKS to all the playtesters in this thread that caught all these ugly bugs (that we've hopefully squashed?) I'm real glad to have this monkey off my back finally—I put more time into carefully tweaking this than NOVA 1, 2, or TNT:R, or any of my solo works. Whether or not folks like it as much as those, I guess we'll have to see, but I think UDINO is a decent mapset that offers something a little different for a limit-removing project. This is probably the last community project that I'm going to have such a heavy hand in shaping, as it was a tiring experience that hit way too many roadblocks. From now on I'll likely stick to solo stuff, or more hands-off administrative duty (ie no editing). But for a (potential) last huzzah with the community, I'm glad it was for something as loose and eclectic as UDINO. Now go get slapped by some barons! -

dobu gabu maru replied to Steve D's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Steve is busy this holiday season but he's hoping for an early 2024 release, if all goes well. Still got some maps being shuffled around, but the full megawad is there and is in the process of being playtested, barring one or two maps that are still coming together. Anyway, here are some screenshots from some maps Steve let me polish up: -

Ultimate Doom "In Name Only" - On IDgames
dobu gabu maru replied to cannonball's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I've just about finished with all the automap edits for the whole megawad, which has taken a surprisingly long time but will hopefully be worth it. For those that don't know what that means: I aim to make the automaps as clean and readable, so the player spends as little time as possible being lost. That means removing unnecessary ceiling markings, outdoor scenery, and rendering any place unreachable to the player as invisible. Here's some examples of my edits, with the original on the left and my refinement on the right: E3M7 E1M2 E2M8 You can see how basically any corridor-centric map stays mostly the same while outdoor zones have considerably less detail cluttering the screen. I find the simplicity pleasing, and it's definitely something I'm going to be doing for all my maps from here on out. -

woof that's quite an undertaking. I'm sure it'll be fantastic in the end—I'm looking forward to hearing the tunes you've cooked up for the project. Curious how much of the megawad will be a facelift vs a remake. As you mentioned to Rudolph, "remastering" old mapsets is kind of uncharted territory for us as a community... makes me curious if outside folks would be interested in such a thing. -
