It's one of the sounds that can be played when you press Y to confirm that you want to quit the game. I could never pick this out from their foot stomping.

To me it would make more sense if they had no passive sound and this was their "injured" sound.

Would it be difficult to modify this in ZDoom?

creative uses of monster pathinghttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142900-creative-uses-of-monster-pathing/ something that you don't see often (though i wish was) is creatively using doom's monster pathing in creative ways. a great example of this to give everyone an idea of what i mean by that would be Barbie Girl by capellan, someone who i will not be tagging this time because i have a feeling if i do one more time he's going to strangle me. it's this really neat map where you have to use a pinkie almost like a companion cube, guiding it around as part of various puzzles that you have to solve in order to progress through the map.

 

knowing doom, this is likely very, very far from the only example. so what're some other cool ways that monster pathing has been used?

Romero seems rather fond of the Cyberdemons in this mapset. Usually when you see a Cyberdemon loose in a map 1 and 2 with clearly insufficient resources to deal with it, you've got to telefrag it. While it seems technically possible to do that, you have to get super lucky to position it right since these Cyberdemons walk around the map and don't stay in one teleport destination-sized region for very long. I don't think you're supposed to be able to kill these rocket-spewing guard dogs, and they have a nasty habit of defending the secret areas.

Why couldn't I beat Holy Hell?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142899-why-couldnt-i-beat-holy-hell/ Imagine at the end of your 5 hour plus playthrough of a brutal doom map, some inexplicable bug occurs that prevents you from being able to beat the map, well that's what happened to me.(Just to preface, I played in DSDA-Doom) Normally at the end of Holy Hell you go through a teleporter which sends you through a teleport sequence that leads you directly to the end of map, but for me those teleporters didn't work, and I have no idea why. At first I thought that monsters must have passed through one time teleports and caused them to disable and indeed they are one time only, except for the fact that the lines are also monster blocking, making this explanation impossible. What confuses me even more is that when I start the map from the beginning, the teleport lines are green on the automap (showing that they are teleporters) but when I reload my save from near the end of the map, the lines are not green, meaning that something must have used them at some point between the start and end. So that begs the question, what could've possibly broken these teleporters?

For instance, before Doom I didn't know much about computers. I didn't understand file extensions, for instance. I didn't know how to install programs and games. I didn't know how to use DOS. In fact I don't think I fully realized what it was. But as I learned how to make levels, I had to learn how to run them in Doom, and that meant learning to use DOS. Then I got on the internet. A few months later I learned that AOL gave each member 2mb of space for a website. So I went ahead and started one about Doom (Moe's Cool Doom Page, as some veterans may recall). At first I just used the program provided by AOL to design it. Then I ventured out and tried other programs. Then I learned HTML and did it in notepad. And as I became acquainted with Internet Doom community, I met people from all over the US and all over the world. I learned how to use IRC servers so I could attend TeamTNT meetings. I learned a great deal about computers and the Internet because of my interest in this game.

are secrets that the player can get locked out of really all that bad?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142677-are-secrets-that-the-player-can-get-locked-out-of-really-all-that-bad/ something that i've noticed people really, really despise more than anything else are secrets that the player can permanently get locked out of. it's a design utterly reviled and seen as being tantamount to mass murder...but personally, i think that opinion is a load of shit.

i recently just found out that several of the maps made by someone whose work i adore actually have this exact thing, where secrets will have doors that only open once or will get closed off permanently if taking a certain route. i thought it was pretty funny at first because i saw it as a bit of a fuck you to the player, but i asked him about it and he told me that major part of it is about replayability. which, yeah, that actually makes sense; it does in fact add a bit of replayability to the map when you play through it a second time, now that you have that foreknowledge of what you should do in order to get the secret. sure, you'll be prevented from getting 100% on your first blind run, but is that really that big of a deal? not every blind run needs to have you experiencing every little thing there is to the map!

it's something that only prevents you from getting something that's completely optional and doesn't affect any of the actual progression of the map while providing extra replay value, so i really don't see why it's such a disparaged practice. is there any legitimate reason other than "i can't 100% this map blind this sucks fuck you" that makes this so horrible? from where i stand, the sole downside is that it pushes certain people out of their comfort zone a little.

edit to add something to clear up confusion: no, maps that solely use a secret that can lock you out isn't suddenly replayable just because of that. it simply compounds replayability that's already there is all

Post your Doom related confessionshttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142573-post-your-doom-related-confessions/ Random idea I got. I'll start with my own confession:

 

I never played TNT or Plutonia without using mods.

After playing through The Ultimate Doom and Doom2 for the first time, on ZDoom with vanilla gameplay, I discovered Brutal Doom and decided to play TNT and Plutonia with it. For a while, I found it off when I heard people calling Plutonia hard because with BD it was a breeze lol. For a few years every wad I played was paired with some kind of gameplay mod, so there's a bunch of wads I never played through with their vanilla gameplay.

This changed since I switched to DSDA Doom, and now I'm playing through Alien Vandetta and BTSX E1 without mods, and I plan to finally go through TNT and Plutonia properly soon as well.

 

If a thrad like this exists already then I aplogize; either way I hope this will be fun!

but when that was playing and the infinite void was infront of me i just started to think, a doom map fully empty, no midi, no guns, just a infinite void, it was terrifying

i was thinking the thought of what happens when you pass the lines that cut the grid of the map to the DOOM MAP VOID

and what lies beyond the void, is there anything there? will the engine crash? Are you alone? is there one imp lying dead there? 

and if i go further in, will something change? udb does not let me go beyond the grid, while it may be just nothing for as far as the eye can see

the brain can trick your senses of boredom into seeing things, or even if you do not see things, the thought of being alone, no music, no monsters, no ammo, nothing in a doom map forever wandering the doom map void scares me

The thought of the monsters in any classic doom map staying motionless forever, as the universe had its heat death and only one computer is left,

Just going to make a new thread for streaming in general that i'll keep up to date.

Updates can be in the form of when you start your stream, getting your
stream added to the main list in the first post here or just informing the thread of a streamed doom event.

EDIT: I attempted to filter out the inactive streams on the front page and add in new streams that are currently active. I mostly just checked the last page or two of the thread, please send me a message if you intend to be an active doom streamer and secondly if I accidentally removed you from page 1 but are still indeed an active streamer.

Secondly, I created a twitch team page a while back called ultraviolence a while back to consolidate the doom streamers into a single area to be easy to find. If you want to be part of this team don't hesitate to ask.

I think this was in a megawad, it had water that was made out of a lot of small sections and it was moving to emulate waves, this is a very old wad pack I played ages ago. That is all I know, but I really enjoyed it and I would love to see it again. I hope someone else has played it and remembers it as well.

I have a list of 34 channels I check occasionally so.. Zero Master and Decino have to be my two idols for Doom stuff but they are too perfect and technical they drive me insane, "how the hell can they even do that" etc. Doomkid too for technical/explaining stuff like Decino of course.

 

While I'll never get at this next one's level either, I think Brainfreezzzzz has to be my favorite Doom YouTuber, his comments, jokes, how mad he gets and his insane skills, which make even the hardest map look easy, is just too enjoyable to watch.

 

UltraViolence is another one too, funny stuff and great skills. I also enjoy watching MtPain27.

 

I'll probably come back to add more as I think about them, which are your favorites?

What's your choice? I'll go first, I choose before 2010 because there's too many influential wads from back then. iD Software protagonist family treehttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142630-id-software-protagonist-family-tree/ I recently watched GermanPeter's recent video "Doom Graphics And Audio in other id Games," the video revealed that the Quake Ranger had sprites that were based off of Doom Guy's face. I found this so profound that I convinced myself that all the iD protagonists are all related, so I made this (probably very inaccurate) Family tree.

Since Wolfenstein 3D and the new games are in different canons to each other, characters like Anya aren't included.

Sparky of KISS Software (or KISS Software?) - how many members of this Doom modding team were there?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142871-sparky-of-kiss-software-or-kiss-software-how-many-members-of-this-doom-modding-team-were-there/ For many mainstream Doom mod projects, groups of individuals would band together to create a team of more than just two or three, which would result in the most played WADs we have today, these teams include the likes of The Innocent Crew, TeamTNT, Wraith Corporation, Black Shadow Software, Chaos Crew, Korax Team, KS Team as well as the most recent ones like Back to Saturn X Team, YEDS and BigBrik Games, just to name a few.

 

However, there is one team of the Doom modding scene doesn't get brought up alot in discussions for Doom WADs, that group is Sparky of KISS Software (or maybe just KISS Software?)

 

This was a small group of modders that released mostly below average quality WADs for Doom 1 & 2, and two WADs designed for Hacx, and were active between 1999 until 2002 with the final release being support for MP2 music definitions for jDoom.

 

The exact number of members of Sparky of KISS Software remains a mystery, given the fact that most teams for the Doom modding scene are somewhere between 10 to 100 members, nobody has a definitive answer to the amount of members of this small group.

 

There's also appears to not even be a website for Sparky of KISS Software known to have been found anywhere, and the Doom Wiki doesn't even have an article for this small group either.

 

Unless one has more answers to the amount of members, and what any unreleased projects that were being made that were never finished, documenting everything for Sparky of KISS Software will likely be impossible.
