I have never personally seen, nor heard, of anyone attempting to modify the Doom source code. It's kind of an insane idea and if anyone ever tries, they deserve to be locked up.

Paintshop Pro (PSP) was widely used for doom graphic editing back then. I remember it having a lens flare effect like this. My money is on PSP or something similar.

This is pretty sweet. I think from a mechanical perspective, you could make your life easier by not going through the frames of their arms swinging. Arms swing opposite to a person's gait. That's not going to be the case when your lower portion is wheels.

You can change wads on-the-fly in the Odamex client, via the wad command in console. I think there are also a couple hard coded features that make use of it, like if you load BFG edition, you can choose No Rest for the Living as an episode and it will load it on the fly too

Your other reasons aside, I'd like to explore this. Odamex has hosted competitive leagues with players from a high level across four continents simultaneously. It's also hosted events with dozens (even hundreds) of players in the same server. What issues were you having that would indicate it handles network traffic "rather poorly?" The overwhelming majority of users have never said anything of the sort.

Let me tell you something, I haven't even begun to peak. And when I do peak, you'll know. Because I'm gonna peak so hard that everybody in Doom's gonna feel it.
