Which sourceport to use to play heretic nowdays?

Being the closest to vanilla option is kind of the Chocolate ports' mission statement, after all. Not fixing bugs, not adding stuff, just being as close as possible to the original experience.

if resolution is an issue there's always "Russian Doom" which is a friendly Crispy fork with 800p support

Thanks for the link. Didn`t know that OG Russian Doom is beign developed. Tried playing Heretic with this: great stuff. 800p res(sadly not 1080p) and lots of nice QoL additions!

yeah the project has been picked up again by another team, with julia's blessing/permission

 

julia on the other hand is working on the rebooted inter-doom, which is going to support heretic too

I was caught in the act! 😳 Well, yep, that's true, Inter-Heretic is WIP for now. Working on true color support for Crispy Heretic gave me a huge boost of motivation and the story repeats, I have used CRL-Heretic as a base to go a full path again. True color, triple resolution and painless resolution toggling are also there. In general, it's done for about ~70%, but not all plans and features are done, not every my previously written function is reviewed/rewritten. Attention to details will be needed as well.

 

My aims for Heretic are same to Doom:

  1. Completely resource independent, i.e. no included PWADs or assets.
  2. Demo and multiplayer compatibility with Chocolate and Crispy Heretic.
  3. Without any single correction/fix in game mechanics. Demo-safe exceptions are made for some gameplay features, but no more than that.
  4. Vanilla-like defaults. Various options will allow user to customize visuals for their taste.
  5. No "features for features", keeping reasonable amount.

Something like that. But I really can't say when it will be done, I'm trying to do it calmly and without hurry, and have some small responsibilities in Crispy Doom and Woof source ports from time to time. Somewhere in the end of February 2024th, maybe.

 

Meanwhile, please use any of recommended port from messages above. Every of them have own pros. 😉

Crispy got really fucking good in the last year or so. Highly recommend for a vanilla experience. Otherwise, I would recommend GZDoom.

A bit late for OP, but I checked out International Heretic a week or two ago, and have now ended up playing through all the original levels with flipped levels on. I think my brain is a little broken from the experience, but regardless, inter-heretic has turned into an excellent port, and @Julia Nechaevskaya is still going at it. With features like a widget to show all ammo, randomly mirrored corpses, toggleable truecolour rendering and increased resolution settings, all while still maintaining a classic feel and demo compatibility, it's definitely my favourite port for Heretic at the moment. (inter-doom is also really good too, though the market for good Doom ports is a lot more crowded.)

That's good! Glad you still wrote here. I did finish my Heretic playthrough a couple of weeks ago even the dreaded episode 5 and 6 which at the start are very hard. I even got through Hexen. Very cool game minus the obnoxious wendingos urg and other things. Now I have to consider playing  Hexen II.
