QuaketallicA Posted December 24, 2023 Both are good. I prefer original Doom 3 for the darker lighting and having to swap between flashlight and guns. Those who complained about that when it first came out entirely missed the point that the choice was not about being unrealistic, but done intentionally for setting the mood. I've also played BFG edition though, and it is also nice to play through the levels with somewhat improved visibility. They're just alternative ways that each have their own benefits. BFG edition also comes with a new Doom 3 episode and a new Doom II episode, both of which are high quality. 1 Share this post Link to post

'No Rest for the Living' is a top-notch Doom II episode made by Nerve Software (who also made 'Resurrection of Evil'), and belongs in the higher tier of custom WADs. 'The Lost Mission', while certainly missing a lot of polish imo, has some cool tech base levels and some pretty spectacular hell levels at the end to cap it off. It's a valid point to weigh when discussing the strengths of the BFG edition. 0 Share this post Link to post

Well there's nothing really to weigh. id are kind enough to give us both versions now for anybody who has one or the other. 0 Share this post Link to post

The lighting difference between both is entirely down to the r_lightScale cvar; it's 2 in original Doom 3, but 3 in BFG edition. Otherwise the lighting and shaders are effectively the same. 0 Share this post Link to post

Cursed Lemon Posted December 31, 2023 I prefer the original because for some reason I can't get my edits to the shotgun spread variable to stick in the BFG version :P 0 Share this post Link to post
