COMPET-Newshttps://www.doomworld.com/news/compet-news-r5/There's a nice update over on the COMPET-N where the big news is that Vincent Catalaa has managed to do not one but two Doom 2 nightmare runs, making him the second person to ever do it. Among the other feats are Episode 1 UV improved by an entire 30 seconds (?!?!) and a new Map03 rocket jump. Don't forget the ongoing contest! Overall, a great time for speedrunning.

Quakers Do Doomhttps://www.doomworld.com/news/quakers-do-doom-r6/Aardappel's Doom Page has announced the release of the "QBoard Doom 2 SP WAD" created by Biff Debris, Lunaran, and Aardappel. This 3-level WAD was created by 3 Quake mappers as a "retro" mapping project to see how they would fare with linedefs and vertices as opposed to brushes and polygons.

New JHexen https://www.doomworld.com/news/new-jhexen-r11/A new version of that kickass OpenGL Hexen port JHexen has been released. This latest version includes the following additions:

  • lens flares (flares, flaresize, flareintensity)
  • support for up to 28 joystick buttons and a 4-dir POV control
  • more joystick controls (flying, strafing, inventory)
  • help: help about ccmds and cvars, e.g. 'help listfiles'
  • immediateuse: use an item immediately when choosing one from the inventory
  • crosshair: choose from 6 crosshairs, freely set size and color
  • additional console variables: lookspeed, spralign

There are also the following handful of fixes:

  • hit monsters above/under you
  • maxdl works properly
  • psprites won't get stretched with a scaled-down status bar

If you have Hexen sitting on your hard drive or lying around on a CD, you have to try out this port! It's freaking awesome... now we just need to see a JDoom!

Romero On Doom https://www.doomworld.com/news/romero-on-doom-r18/John Romero has made a .plan update reminiscing about the release of Doom six years ago today.

It was six short years ago, down to the hour. I remember staying up the last 30 hours doing exhaustive testing before Jay Wilbur uploaded the shareware version of DOOM to the University of Wisconsin's FTP site. We couldn't get in -- too many people were sitting on the site, waiting for our upload. The target directory was full of bogus files with names like "when.is.it.coming" and "hurry.up.id", but finally we got the sysop to up the connect limit to 250 and we barely got in. After that upload, things changed.

I remember the crazy lockup bug we had the day before -- if DOOM sat running for too long, it would just lock up. Turned out to be a value that was being incremented by the 140-tic-per-second timer function that was wrapping around (it takes a very long time for a LONG to wrap, even at 140-tics-per-second, but this one was uninitialized so it took even less time). So, we finished it up and sent it out, just knowing everyone would have a lot of fun with it. Happy Birthday, DOOM.

Happy birthday indeed!

Doom2000 id's Next Project? https://www.doomworld.com/news/doom2000-ids-next-project-r20/Yeah right, as if. There has been a lot of speculation about the possibility of id Software's next game being a long-awaited third installment in the Doom series. Now, naturally, there is nothing saying that id will make a Doom2000, but here are some reasons why it not be quite as far-fetched as one would imagine.
  • id Software owns the www.doom2000.com domain name
  • Doom references can be found within Quake 2 (a secret room with the Doom logo, and the return of the BFG) and Quake 3 Arena (the Doomguy character, obviously), meaning that Doom is still on the minds of id
  • Kenneth Scott, recently acquired artist for id Software, has been described as a "huge Doom freak" and got one of his first breaks creating monster sprites for the commercial Doom 2 TC HACX
  • Mentions of a possible Doom2000 at QuakeCon resulted in wild cheers and clapping from the assembled audience
  • Xatrix Entertainment, makers of games such as Kingpin and Redneck Rampage, have been rumored to be creating a sequel to id's classic game Wolfenstein 3D -- instead of a sequel to Doom, an obviously "hotter property" -- suggesting a reason why they were denied the privelege of creating a new Doom game
  • Tim Willits, lead level designer at id Software, made the "Raven" series of Doom 2 levels and contributed to the Doom 2 Master Levels and episode 4 of The Ultimate Doom, but has never actually gotten to help create a Doom game
There's some stuff to chew on for a while...

Is This Thing On? https://www.doomworld.com/news/is-this-thing-on-r21/Sorry about yesterday if you weren't able to access the site. Telefragged took down the servers for upgrades, making them even more monstrous than they previously were.

On a slightly more important note, I'm decided to try a "dry run" of the comments system I'm busily adding to Doomworld. There are still some kinks in it right now -- for one thing, the server often won't update the number of comments listed underneath each news update, and it's also not on a permanent databse so anything you post might be erased in a few days. But whatever... try it out! Give me a good reason to make comments a permanent addition to Doomworld.

More Columbine https://www.doomworld.com/news/more-columbine-r22/I was just pointed over towards The Drudge Report where it's been reported that this week's TIME magazine is going to feature a large article about home videos created by the two Columbine killers prior to their April 20 massacre at a Colorado high school. The details are very surprising and also saddening, as one of the teenagers reportedly brandished a shotgun at one point and said, "it's going to be like f__ Doom!" While the article apprently doesn't target Doom as a reason for the shootings, such a compelling sound bite is sure to resurrect the spectre of "Doom encorages violence" which none of us were glad to see the first time around.

Keeping It Going https://www.doomworld.com/news/keeping-it-going-r23/The TeamTNT homepage had a rare update a few days ago regarding the status of Doom2000 (their ZDoom-based WAD project, not that other Doom2000). New ZDoom https://www.doomworld.com/news/new-zdoom-r24/I see that there's a new version of ZDoom out, bringing the Linux/Win32 Doom port up to version 1.22. New in this version? Well...

[list]

  • Scroll_Texture_Both and TranslucentLine specials can now be used from ACS.
  • Fixed compiler-dependent cvar ordering during netgame arbitration.
  • Fixed certain polyobject movement combinations that would not stop even though they were supposed to.
  • Did some cleanup for Alpha processors.

  • I think that the second one is another way of saying that Win32 and Linux users can now play multiplayer games versus one another, since that's what Randy also goes into detail about in his news update.

    • Securitron has posted a screenshot and an animated GIF showing off a new monster which has been completed for episode 3 (a brand-new one too, not just a sarge head on an imp body or something too).
    • Fanatic has been working away on QDOOM, planning out E2M3 as well as balancing the other maps for deathmatch play. Also, the "Fragging Fanatical" CDs continue their long arduous journey towards being ready to ship.
    • The Chaos Crew is back, spreading chaos and mayhem as usual. There's the news that their in-progress WAD "Caverns of Darkness" probably won't make a '99 release date, but there are some new screenshots to peruse, not to mention a note to come back for a present on the 25th.
    • Everybody Dies is back, which makes it the third or fourth time this webpage has been taken down and put back up. The megawad appears to be cranking along, but don't expect any "episode by episode" release structure.
