DOOM95

About This File

DOOM95.EXE will work with any DOOM or DOOM2 main wadfile.

With DOOM95, you no longer need to keep your main wads in seperate directories. Copy all main wad files (DOOM.WAD, DOOM2.WAD, PLUTONIA.WAD, TNT.WAD, etc) to the DOOM95 directory and launch DOOM95. To play, choose the appropriate wad file from the launcher and then start the game.

Frankly I've never had a problem with doom95 and I still use it off and on today. Works good with XP, you just need to disable screen rotation in your graphic properties to get rid of that random flip glitch. 5/5 ~Joe Anderson

I never had the ability to play Doom in it's pure, bare basic form. This is as close to it as i can get, as my laptop can't run DOS programs, and DOSBox crashes 99.9% of the time when i try to load Doom. 5/5

If you have trouble running this on Win7-64bit, try renaming "dplayx.dll" in C:\Windows\SysWOW6 4 to "dplay.dll."

5/5 Better than Chocolate Doom as it is not GPL, but not as great as Zdoom :)

Terrible port...I just hate it so much. I'd rather use DOS than this piece of crap that messes with everything. No DOS you say? Zdoom then.

My first Doom experience was on friend's black-and-green crt monitor with win95 and this bad boy, Doom95 on it. Unforgettable thing. Before I learned about other ports, this was the way to play Doom.

This is the port that I use for all my dooming. The only time I don't use it is when the wad requires a more powerful port, like Zdoom. For me, it's the instant level select that sells it for me over vannila Doom. Plus, there's no jury rigging required for advanced computers (although i've heard of Vista having problems with it). All and all, a solid port.

Nearly obsolete nowadays, because there are many alternatives and because it was made for Windows 9x but can have issues in more modern releases of Microsoft's monstrosities. (Even id Software reverted to Doom on DOSBox for the recent Steam release.) Regardless, in its native environment it is relatively stable and rather faithful to the DOS version. Plus let's not forget this package includes Knee Deep in the Dead, and not just the Doom95 engine. [4/5] ~Chain Mail (11/2007)

I disagree with most people. While Doom95 offers a vanilla styled gameplay, it's full of bugs and crashes. I don't recommend this. Instead, I recommend Chocolate Doom. It's the true ultimate alternative to playing original Doom in it's vanilla state! Maybe some of you (like me) have Collector's Edition which (unfortunately) comes with this executable instead of old DOS exes. Don't worry, as I said, get Chocolate Doom! I give 1 star for Doom95 for reasons above. -Doomer95

This made playing PWADS much easier as a kid and I've been hooked on DooM even more ever since. The sound effects are a slightly lower pitch, but despite it's flaws it's very accurate to DOS Doom/Doom2. ..Nowadays, Just use Zdoom, Zandronum or Zdaemon.

^^^wrong! Chocolate Doom is the best vanilla source port! Doom95 sucks because is full of bugs. I have Collector's Edition and Doom95 came with the IWADS instead of old DOS executable files. But don't worry, you can download Chocolate Doom if you want to experience the good old days of playing Doom! I give this source port 3/5.

I remember playing this as part of a Windows 95 Game Demo disc that came with our old computer. Boy, has it been so long? This was the way I played it well into my teens, when I discovered other sourceports. But yeah, if you want the Dos experience, get Chocolate Doom. 5/5 for pure nostalgia.

2fort on it's original incarnation.   Pretty great.

The first ever version of 2fort. It barely resembles its later incarnations.   Crazy how an entire franchise and FPS genre spawned from a single map. It's a crime that the origins of Team Fortress have been forgotten. Most people don't know anything before Quake/TF1 2fort, but nope, this is yet another massively influential thing that the Doom community can claim.

Great fun. Bleak, metal-driven style over fairly easy substance, which is a good thing. I can see the song getting annoying in a more challenging map.

Pretty fun map if you want some quick, easy slaughter fun. Just sucks a bit that you can just cheese the whole thing by leaving the arena and running around at the edges of the map. Cool to play with gameplay mods tho!   Music is alright but it does get a little annoying after a while.

Classic, sober, simple tech map that I'm fond of. The flow of the map is like a river, and the backtrack (that myself is usually upset about) is intuitive to follow. The teleport repopulation is smart enough. I don't know about the health/ammo tightness other comments talked about because I played with a mod.
